CSOTFA District 10 is holding a CAJUN / CREOLE FIDDLING WORKSHOP in Sebastopol on Saturday, November 9th starting at 2:00 PM with a jam immediately following. Net proceeds from the workshop go to support the District 10 Scholarship Program. Here's a description:
Cajun/Creole Fiddling, taught by Gus Garelick.
A short, hands-on survey of Cajun and Creole fiddling. We will start with the simple "Cajun Shuffle" bowing, and play a traditional tune (Bayou Teche) and a Buck Owens tune (Cajun Fiddle) using that bowing. Then, we'll look at a Cajun waltz (Love Bridge Waltz) and learn some of the ornaments that make it sound uniquely Cajun, including the backup fiddling, known as 'seconding.' We'll explore more 'seconding' techniques in a blues tune called Grande Bosco. After that, time permitting, we'll look at some Creole fiddling, including tunes by Canray Fontenot, Amede Ardoin and others.
Gus Garelick has been playing Cajun and Zydeco music for over 25 years, including work with Queen Ida in San Francisco and, locally, with the late Jim Boggio and the Sonoma Swamp Dogs. He currently plays with the Wild Catahoulas, as well as the Italian band, Hot Frittatas.
Cost of the workshop is $25 General / $20 for District 10 Members.
Contact Colleen_Hogan@comcast.net / (707) 829-8012 to reserve a seat and get directions. Space is limited so reserve your space today!!
Please feel free to forward this email to other fiddlers. It promises to be an excellent workshop for those interested in this style!!
The newly formed District 10 (Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino counties) of the California Old-Time Fiddlers Association is sponsoring a series of Fiddle workshops in old-time fiddle styles. These workshops will be led by a variety of notable local fiddle players, focused on different styles. Proceeds from the workshops will go to sponsor fiddle students who would not otherwise have access to an instrument or lessons.
Notables in organizing this group include: Janette Duncan, Gus Garelick, Mike Drayton, Chris Carney and Andi Skelton.
Please join us for one or all of these wonderful and informative workshops.
Originally scheduled for Aug. 10th, the Ely Stage Stop fiddle jam session will be held on Nov 3rd - 1:00-3:00.
It was an original stage stop on Hwy 29 and was moved to it's current location on Soda Bay Road by the Lake Co Historical Society. It is beautifully restored and is now a museum. They also have built a large barn on the property suitable for Contra dancing, etc. There will be more information out soon about other activities at this event.
This is presented by Ely Stage stop and the Calif State Old Time Fiddle Assoc. Dist.10, which includes fiddlers from Lake, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Proceeds from the event will go to the Dist 10 treasury. There will be no charge for musicians to the day's activities. There will be a table for membership registration to join CSOTFA.. The event will take place in the new barn and will be a round robin style jam. This will be a chance to hear and play with some great fiddlers from other counties.
Ely Stage Stop is on Soda Bay Rd about 1/2 mile from Hwy 29 on the left hand side. There should be a marker at the turn in.
